The artist is confronted yet again with different cultures and new places during a specific period of time – the era of confinements imposed by governments worldwide during the Covid-19 pandemic, stretching from March 2020 until February 2022.
Best known for her plaster face masks and her works on canvas engaging mixed media, Irina experiments with allowing the elements from her memory flow freely on paper.
Exploring the influence of displacement and confinement during this specific period, she is overwhelmed by a constant flow of data in different places; Singapore, Geneva, and Vancouver. Here, across these platforms, human relationships are caught between an irreconcilable need for security and freedom.
She experiments with new media, finding herself out of the traditional environment that is a “studio”, improvising a sketch everyday.
The exhibition held in Paris, at the invitation of a colleague and longtime friend, visual artist and performer Ioana Violet, had on show some of her snapshots of the confinement.
A diary of sorts, each day presenting a new image representing the instants of the day – a collection of memories: ink on paper, watercolors, crayons, photos, digital drawings and so forth.
